How to Prep Your Dog for a Photoshoot (Without the Stress)
Getting your dog ready for a photo session doesn’t need to be a big production. A little prep goes a long way and helps your pup feel more relaxed and ready to shine.
A short walk before the session can take the edge off extra energy, especially for high-energy dogs. Not so long that their tongue is hanging out the side of their mouth. A little energy released is great, but a full marathon is not needed. Bring along some of their favorite treats (the good stuff!) and maybe a toy or two. If they know a few basic cues like “sit” or “stay,” that’s great; but it’s absolutely fine if they don’t. Don't stress about it. Trust the process.
Give them a quick clean-up the day before, think brushed fur, clean eyes, and a collar you don’t mind seeing in photos. Collars can be retouched out but a harness is very difficult to remove. So it is best to plan for something you don't mid seeing in the picture. Skip the full groom on the same day to avoid extra stress or fluff. Just like when we have our hair cut... it's always best a couple of days later. You know your dog. Plan accordingly.
If your dog has reactivity issues, I’ll do everything I can to choose a location that helps keep them calm and comfortable. As the owner of a reactive dog myself, I completely understand how stressful it can be to navigate potential triggers. I always avoid dog parks and prioritize quiet, low-traffic spots where your pup can feel at ease. One of the best things about the Greater Edmonton area is the wide variety of peaceful parks available to us. And if you're still feeling unsure, we can always hold the session in my St. Albert photo studio for a fully controlled environment.
Most of all, stay relaxed. Your dog will take cues from you. We’re not aiming for perfection, just honest, beautiful moments that show who they are.
