As the snow comes down outside this seems like a fitting post!
How do you get your best winter portraits? In one word… flexibility!
Winter can be a magical time for outdoor portraits in Alberta, but it also keeps us on our toes. If you’ve lived here a while, you know the most breathtaking frosty days often arrive with the chilliest temperatures. The greater Edmonton area can be unpredictable in winter: one day we have sparkling snow and dreamy hoarfrost, and the next everything is brown, slushy, or frozen solid at -30°C.
That’s why the key to truly stunning winter wonderland portraits is being flexible.
If you’ve been dreaming of snow-filled portraits but are nervous about timing, you’re not alone. I love a well-planned schedule too, but winter is its own creature. Often the best approach is to choose a general timeframe and then be ready to go when the weather cooperates. I’m very used to working this way in the colder months and happy to be flexible when the conditions are just right.
So if the world outside has turned into a snowy storybook scene and you’d love to capture it, reach out. My winter outdoor schedule stays adaptable, as long as I’m not traveling.
And just a note for comfort and safety: for most dogs, sessions are best at -10°C or warmer. Your pet’s wellbeing always comes first.
Let’s make some winter magic whenever Mother Nature says it’s time.
Featured Session: Peach and her people. We had a magical winter afternoon last January.
