My annual Dog Mom Promo is just around the corner, and maybe you have a few reservations about stepping in front of the camera. While the promo doesn’t mean you have to be in the photos with your pet, I always encourage it if you feel comfortable enough to try.
As someone who has experienced the loss of a soul pet, I can honestly say I am deeply grateful for the images that captured our bond. Those photographs mean so much more than a perfectly posed portrait. They hold memories of connection, love, and the little moments that made our relationship special. That gratitude comes even though I personally feel very uncomfortable in front of the camera myself.
I understand that not everyone loves having their picture taken. Many people feel shy, awkward, or worry they won’t know what to do. The good news is that being in photos with your pet does not have to mean staring down the lens with a forced smile. Some of the most meaningful images happen when you simply focus on your dog instead of the camera.
There are so many gentle, natural ways to capture your bond. If your pet enjoys being close, I can guide you into positions where your faces are near one another, creating images that feel candid, intimate, and full of emotion. There is something incredibly soft and loving about hands holding a paw, stroking a face, or fingers resting in familiar fur. Sometimes the smallest details tell the biggest story.
We can also use depth of field creatively, with you softly blurred in the background while your pet remains in focus, or the other way around. These kinds of images can feel artistic, relaxed, and authentic while still including you in the story.
At the end of the day, your pet doesn’t care if your hair is perfect or if you know your “best angle.” They simply know you are their person. Years from now, these photos won’t be about how you looked that day. They will be about the love you shared and the life you built together. And that is always worth remembering.
Enjoy a few examples from past sessions. I look forward to catching all those special bonds with my camera. My annual Very Important Pup (VIP) Mom Sessions launch on May 1st.
